1. देशबन्धश्चित्तस्य धारणा ।
DESHABANDHASHCHITTASYA DHAARANAA
DESHA=PLACE, SPOT; BANDHA=BINDING, FIXING; CHITTASYA=OF AWARENESS, CONSCIOUSNESS, OF MIND; DHAARANAA=HOLDING, SUSTAINING;
Binding of awareness concentrated on a place is Dhaaranaa.
Holding Concentration on a place is Dhaaranaa. A place could be internal or external. It could be subtle or gross. Like an internal organ or a thought or an external object.
2. तत्र प्रत्ययैकतानता ध्यानम् ।
TATRA PRATYAYAIKATAANATAA DHYAANAM
TATRA=THERE IN, PRATYAYA=EXPERIENCE; EKATAANATAA= SAMENESS, CONCENTRATION; DHYAANAM=MEDITATION, CONTEMPLATION, AWARENESS;
Therein the sameness of experience is Meditation, Dhyaanam.
When the yogi is so absorbed with the experience of the object of concentration that he becomes one with it's experience, it is Dhyanam or meditation.
3. तद् एवार्थमात्रनिर्भासं स्वरूपशून्यम् इव समाधिः ।
TAD EVAARTHAMAATRANIRBHAASAM SVAROOPASHOONYAM IVA SAMAADHIHI
TAD=THAT; EVA=INDEED; ARTHAMAATRA=ONLY MEANING, ONLY IN ESSENCE; NIRBHASAM=APPEARS; SVAROOPASHOONYAM=FORMLESS; IVA=AS IF; SAMAADHI=DEEP MEDITATIVE STATE
That appears indeed as meaning alone like devoid of any form
The object appearing in meaning only as if its own appearance is absent, that state is Trans state or Samaadhi.
Samaadhi state is when the yogi is so engrossed in the experience of the object that the object appears only in its meaning and not in its form. It means only the formless part of the object which is the higher self present everywhere will be evident to the yogi.
4. त्रयम् एकत्र संयमः ।
TRAYAM EKATRA SANYAMAH
TRAYAM=ALL THREE; EKATRA=TOGETHER; SANYAMAH=RESTRAINT
All three (Concentration, Meditation, Tans state) together are Sanyama.
Holding the consciousness concentrated on a place, meditating continuously on its experience and getting engrossed in it so deeply that it appears as formless self only, these three acts together is Sanyam.
5. तज्जयात् प्रज्ञाऽऽलोकः ।
TAT=THAT; JAYAAT= FROM ATTAINMENT, FROM SUCCESS, CONQUERING; PRADNYA=WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE; AALOKAH=LIGHT
From success of that (Sanyam, there) is the light of knowledge of wisdom.
When Sanyam is successfully achieved, one can see the light of knowledge. The attainment of Sanyam brings forth the knowledge of the object of concentration.
6. तस्य भूमिषु विनियोगः ।
TASYA BHOOMISHU VINIYOGAH
TASYA=ITS; BHOOMISHU=IN LAVELS; VINIYOGAH=USEFULNESS;
Its usage is in levels.
This wisdom or knowledge can be used for goals of different levels from lowly temporary material gains to the high gain of total freedom from suffering and everlasting bliss.
7. त्रयम् अन्तरङ्गं पूर्वेभ्यः ।
TRAYAM ANTARANGAM POORVEBHYAH
TRAYAM=TRIAD; ANTARANGAM=INTERNAL; POORVEBHYAH=FROM THE PREVIOUS
The Triad (Concentration or Dhaarana, Meditation or Dhyaana and Deep meditation or Samaadhi) is internal to the previous (five) limbs of Ashtaanga (eight limbs) Yog.
8. तद् अपि बहिरङ्गं निर्बीजस्य ।
TAD API BAHIRANGAM NIRBEEJASYA
TAD=THAT; API=EVEN; BAHIRANGAM=EXTERNAL; NIRBEEJASYA=OF SEEDLESS, FORMLESS, WITHOUT THE SEED OF MANIFESTATION;
Even though that (the triad) is external of the Trans State without seeds of impressions or formed conditioning of the past (Nirbeeja Samaadhi).
The above mentioned Triad is not as deep as Seedless or Nirbeeja Samaadhi.
Nirbeeja Samaadhi is attained when one goes so deep in Samaadhi that mind becomes empty of all the impressions of the past in the mind which are seeds of manifestation of the future life experiences.
9. व्युत्थाननिरोधसंस्कारयोरभिभवप्रादुर्भावौ निरोधक्षणचित्तान्वयो निरोधपरिणामः ।
VYUTTHAANANIRODHASAMSKAARAYORABHIBHAVAPRAADURBHAAVOU NIRODHAKSHANACHITTAANVAYO NIRODHAPARINAAMAH
VYUTTHAANA=DISTURBING; SAMSKAARAYOH= OF BELIEFS, IMPRESSIONS; ABHIBHAVA=DECLINE, DEFEAT, OVERPOWERING, OVERTHROW; PRADURBHAAVOU=RISE; NIRODHA=CONTROL; KSHANA=MOMENT; CHITTA=CONSCIOUSNESS, MIND; ANVAYO=RESULT;
Effect of Control is the resultant effect on mind of overpowering and manifesting of distracting and controlling beliefs at the moment of control.
Controlling effect on mind happens when the impressions which distract the concentration of mind during Samaadhi are overpowered by the presence of controlling impressions.
10. तस्य प्रशान्तवाहिता संस्कारात् ।
TASYA PRASHAANTAVAAHITAA SAMSKAARAAT
TASYA=ITS; PRASHAANTAVAAHITAA =SMOOTH FLOW; SAMSKAARAAT=FROM IMPRESSIONS
Its (Mind’s) peaceful flow is from the (controlling) beliefs.
The continuous flow of concentration is due to certain beliefs controlling the distracting thoughts and beliefs from entering the mind.
The object appearing in meaning only as if its own appearance is absent, that state is Trans state or Samaadhi.
