31. दुःखदौर्मनस्याङ्गमेजयत्वश्वासप्रश्वासा विक्षेपसहभुवः ।

DUHKHA = SORROW, PAIN; DOURMANASYA = OF DEPRESSION, ANGAMEJAYA = TREMBLING OF BODY; SHWASAPRASHVASA = HARD BREATHING; SAHABHUVAH = CO-EXISTING; VIKSHEPA = DISRUPTIONS
Sorrow, Depression, Trembling of body, Hard Breathing are also co-existing distractions.

Sorrow is the effort to eliminate the pain which is self-created, of worldly causes or of fatal causes of living beings struck by it.
Depression is agitation of mind due to shattering of desire.
That which makes the body shake is the distraction of mind which is trembling of body.
Outside air which is taken in with heaviness through breathing is inhaling or Shvaasa.
That air which is thrown out from lung cavity is exhaling or Prashvassa.
All these happen to be co-existing distractions of wandering mind.
It does not happen this way in composed mind.

MAITREEKARUNAMUDITA UPEKSHANAAM SUKHADUKKHAPUNYAAPUNYAVISHAYANAAM BHAAVANAATAH CHITTAPRASADANAM

Purity of mind is from feeling of friendship, compassion, cheerfulness and indifference towards Happiness, Sorrow, Good deeds and Evil Deeds.
The ways to purify mind are given.
One way is purifying the mind by cultivating positive feelings such as
  • Feel friendliness towards all living beings who are in happiness and enjoyment.
  • Compassion towards those who are in pain.
  • Joyfulness towards those doing good deeds.
  • Indifference towards those of evil character.
  • Thus from these feelings positive virtue is born.
  • And thereafter mind becomes pure.
  • A Step towards pure focused state is gained.
Sat-Chit-Ananda or Existence-Consciousness-Joy is the inherent nature of Self. So keeping this truth in mind, one should always try to be full of joy and love no matter what the experiences are.

34. प्रच्छर्दनविधारणाभ्यां वा प्राणस्य ।
PRACHCHARDANAVIDHAARANAABHYAAM VA PRANASYA
PRACHCHARDANA = EXHALING, EMITTING; VIDHARANA = RESTRAINING, HOLDING; PRANA = LIFE ENERGY
Or exhalation with force and holding of the breath.
Throwing out of breath from the lung cavity through nostrils with extra force, holding or control of breath, by these two, steadiness of mind can be accomplished.

Patanjali tells us how Exhaling and holding the breath helps in purity of mind.

Praana is Life Energy. This is the energy which is manifested into different kinds of Life forces which turns the universe in motion. When this Life energy turns itself into the life force as our breath, it sets all our body functions in motion. This includes our mind functions like thoughts, beliefs, emotions and memories.

Exhale with force and with a feeling that all the negativity of mind and body is exhaled. Then hold as much as possible and let the inhaling happen. (Inhaling happens naturally). This helps in making the mind pure and at peace.

There is one fact about our consciousness. We can never be conscious of both our breath and our thoughts at the same time. During the above breathing exercise, our attention or consciousness is focused on our breath and hence the thoughts are minimal or absent. That makes our mind bereft of (negative) thoughts to some extent. Doing this exercise regularly can help a lot in purifying the mind.

35. विषयवती वा प्रवृत्तिरुत्पन्ना मनसः स्थितिनिबन्धिनी ।
VISHAYAVATEE VA PRAVRUTTIH UTPANNA MANASAH STHITINIBANDHINEE
VISHAYAVATEE= BEING INCLINED TO SENSE OBJECTS; VA = OR; PRAVRUTTI = INCLINATION; UTPANNA = ARISEN; MANASAH = MIND; SHTITI = STATE; NIBANDHINEE = BOUND
Or binding to steadiness the mind with tendency formed towards senses.

36. विशोका वा ज्योतिष्मती
VISHOKA VA JYOTISHMATEE
VISHOKA = SORROW FREE; VA = OR; JYOTISHMATEE = FOCUSSING ON THE INNER LIGHT
Or by contemplating on the inner light which is beyond all sorrow.

37. वीतरागविषयं वा चित्तम् ।
VEETARAAGAVISHAYAM VA CHITTAM
VEETA = DEVOID OF; RAAGA = ATTACHMENT; VISHAYAM = OBJECTS; CHITTAM = MIND
Or focusing on a mind which is devoid of attachment for any objects.
Or by support of a mind adorned of attachment-free state, the mind of yogi attains a steady state.

38. स्वप्ननिद्राज्ञानालम्बनं वा ।
SWAPNANIDRADNYANAALAMBANAM VA
SWAPNA = DREAM; NIDRA = SLEEP; DNYANA = KNOWLEDGE; ALAMBANAM = SUPPORT
Or taking the knowledge of dream and deep sleep state as support.
By taking support of knowledge about dream state or support of knowledge about deep sleep state as an object of concentration, yogi’s mind takes its form and attains a steady state.
When we awaken in our dream state, we get the knowledge that it was a dream based on our own thoughts and feelings during that state.
If we take support of this knowledge, then we will realize that even this life is just like a dream, which is manifested based on our thoughts and feelings.

39. यथाभिमतध्यानाद्वा ।
YATHA ABHIMATA DHYAANAAD VAA
YATHA = AS; ABHIMATA = DESIRED; DHYAANAT = IN CONCENTRATION, MEDITATION;VAA=Or;
Or be in meditation as per desire.
Therein having gained the steadiness elsewhere, yet steadiness of mind is attained
Or one can be in concentration on whatever one desires.

40. परमाणु परममहत्त्वान्तोऽस्य वशीकारः ।
PARAMANU PARAM MAHATTVAANTAH ASYA VASHIKAARAH
PARAMANU = SMALLEST ATOM; PARAM = SUPER; MAHATTVAANTA = OF THE GREATEST OBJECT; VASHIKAARAH = MASTER
A Mastery of this (Yogi) over the ultimate of Sub-atomic to the ultimate massiveness (Entire Universe).
Thus steadiness of mind is attained by one concentrating into the subtle end state of beyond supreme atom.
Steadiness of mind is attained by one concentrating into the worldly objects end state of super greatness.
This way, the super mastery, which can go to those two extremes unopposed, from that mastery, the yogi, the mind fulfilled, does not need to do any practice again for the purpose of preparation.
